Birkenhead School was opened in 1860, with the object of providing a public-school education, both Classical and Modern. Since then, the School has established an enviable track record, with most of its leavers moving on to Higher Education. Great stress, however, is also laid upon the balanced, all-round development of the individual and to this end the creation of a firm but caring Christian ethos is considered vital.
The School is lucky enough to possess a spacious campus in the residential suburb of Oxton, and a substantial development programme is now adding to its already extensive facilities. In the last few years the Arts teaching area has been extended, there has been a รบ450,000 extension to the Science Block and Junior School and a new Technology/Electronics wing has been created. As a result of a most successful Appeal, a multi-purpose Sports Hall has been operational since February 1992. Longer-term developments will be for Music and Drama. A wide range of sports is offered. The main winter sports are rugby and hockey with cricket, athletics and tennis in summer. Provision on our 2 games fields has now been enhanced by the addition of an all-weather surface, a joint project with Oxton Hockey Club. There is a fine musical and dramatic tradition and boys are encouraged to participate in the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer.
The School is now setting up its own Trust Fund to replace Government Assisted Places. The Headmaster is in membership of the Headmasters' Conference and he is always willing to meet prospective parents in order to show them the School.
